Careers and Workplace Culture
Quick Thought - What Does It Say That You Need To Shutdown Your Business for People to get a Break? — www.mikemcbrideonline.com If the issue is that people are getting burned out because they are either not taking time off, are continuing to work during their time off to avoid being overwhelmed with work that piled up, or are actually being contacted by their team members during their time off, how about we figure out how to create a culture that allows people to disconnect during their time off, instead of literally just closing up shop for a week?

Linked: The shortage of tech workers is about to become an even bigger problem for everyone — www.mikemcbrideonline.com The shift in tech skills is one of the contributing factors, but it's not that technology has been changing, because that ALWAYS happens. It's the insistence that employers can find people with a skill that didn't even exist 2-3 years ago instead of actually developing the people they already have, or hiring people who can continue to adjust and learn these skills. How many jobs are going unfilled because you're looking for someone with expertise in a technology that has only been around for the last 1-2 years? How do you expect there to be a bunch of experts on this technology? How do you expect recent graduates to be familiar with the technology that their college curriculum hasn't even caught up to yet? It's not possible. So you might want to start adjusting your hiring, recruitment, and staff development processes, because that's how you shrink the talent gap, by creating the talent yourself.

Linked: Windows 10 is a security disaster waiting to happen. How will Microsoft clean up its mess? — www.mikemcbrideonline.com Ed Bott raises an interesting question about people using PCs that don't meet the requirements in terms of hardware security for Windows 11 but who own otherwise perfectly fine computers. In 2025, when Microsoft stops patching Windows 10, how many computers will still be out there, in use, connected to the internet, and vulnerable. But in the quote above, Ed raises another point that maybe we should be thinking about more. What happens to all the hardware that is no longer supported as technology advances? It ends up in a landfill. That's not good. That's not even acceptable.

Mental Health
Linked: NBA star Kevin Love on mental health struggles, success, getting Covid — www.mikemcbrideonline.com This quote from Kevin Love is something that just stood out to me because it's something that I think is so important to understand. Not just for a professional athlete, but for any of us to remember about our own line of work, or to remember when it comes to young people in school: “You can’t achieve yourself out of depression,” Love says. “You can’t achieve yourself out of that high-level of anxiety.”
Linked: Will mental health resources evaporate post-pandemic? — www.mikemcbrideonline.com It just goes to show what I've always said, your company is not your family, it's not even a friend, and it will always do what is good for itself first, second, and always. If something also happens to be good for you, great, but that's never been the goal, so you have to make decisions based on what is good for you, not the company. If you think that's an overly negative thing to say about CEOs and upper management, go read those percentages again, and consider how many of those same people expect your loyalty, and your dedication during difficult times, without offering the same in return. Also, consider how many HR people have proclaimed themselves as being there for employees, and yet also think employees expect too much. It's not overly negative when it's true.
