Social Media
Calls For Removing Anonymity Miss the Point - Some People Depend on It — www.childabusesurvivor.net While accepting the reality that social media is often a mess, I also happen to be of the opinion that making everyone verify their identity would not be a good solution to this. Recently, an opinion piece appeared at The Hill, titled Call for ‘universal verification’ on social media.. In it, the author argues that all...
Linked: The Metaverse Via Oculus Is Awkward if You're a Woman. And Beware of Griefers — www.mikemcbrideonline.com Why it's almost as if trolls will be trolls, creeps will be creeps, and people will continue to be everything they are on social media or yes, even in person. Because while those who seem to think that the virtual reality and presence of a real voice will somehow dim the hate and harassment that comes from a network where you can be anonymous, we can see plenty of real-life examples where being identifiable didn't stop anyone from acting this way. I mean, half the folks who took part in Jan. 6 bragged about it on social media for days. Do you really think a little VR is going to make them suddenly self-conscious? It's a humanity issue, not a tech issue. No "new" tech that allows people to interact in real-time is going to be without it.

Linked: Quinn Emanuel Says Lawyers Can Work From Home Indefinitely — www.mikemcbrideonline.com What I am also interested in though, is whether any other staff positions were given the same consideration. If the lawyer can work from anywhere, and the impetus is to attract the best lawyers that they can, there's no reason the same thing can't be said about many of the other (granted not all), of the staff positions, right? If the lawyers aren't coming to the office, why do paralegals, assistants, IT, Accounting, etc. need to? Does Quinn Emanuel value those folks, and want the top talent at those positions too?

Linked: Large-scale phishing study shows who bites the bait more often — www.mikemcbrideonline.com They had some interesting findings on gender (doesn't matter) and age (young and older employees seemed more likely), but this is one that I think impacts a lot of what we do when it comes to protecting against phishing: "An interesting finding in the ETH study is that employees who are continuously exposed to phishing eventually fall for it, as 32.1% of the study participants clicked on at least one dangerous link or attachment."
