As we all consider the distinct possibility that a social network used by millions of people will just go dark eventually when the final server glitches and there are no employees left to reboot it, and count the days, hours, or minutes, before that happens, can I ask you to share this newsletter with your own networks so that we can create a little community around interesting things in careers, training, eDiscovery and workplace mental health?
Twitter has, for all of it’s faults, always been a place where I’ve found a lot of knowledge and tried to share a lot of knowledge. We don’t need Twitter to do that. We can do it anywhere that smart, thoughtful, people gather. Let’s make those places together.
Legal and eDiscovery
Paralegals play a key role, especially when armed with legal tech tools
“Law firms that recognize the unique responsibilities of paralegals are seeing better client satisfaction and retention, speakers at a recent discussion on paraprofessionals and innovation told attendees. Paralegals will also thrive most when they have the legal tech tools to optimize their talents and experience.”
Overcoming Fear of New Technology
“Unless you are an IT or cybersecurity techie like me, you may be afraid of new technology. I recently spoke with Catherine Sanders Reach, director for the Center for Practice Management at the North Carolina Bar Association, about the pain points for attorneys when instituting new cybersecurity technology.”
Mental Health
Linked – Job Insecurity Is Toxic to Health
“I’m sure there are still some “old-school” bosses running around who believe the best way to motivate employees is to threaten them and never let them forget that they can be fired at a moment’s notice.
Turns out that they aren’t motivating as much as actively harming them.”
Mental-Health Days Are Only a Band-Aid for Burnout
“Workers don’t need a new type of sick day. They need sustainable jobs.”
Linked - Here's What Happens To Your Brain And Body If You Work More Than 40 Hours A Week
“Reading the science on how more mistake-prone employees working all of those long hours can be makes me wonder if Elon had taken a few hours off and gotten some rest maybe he doesn’t make that offer to buy Twitter and find himself in the mess he’s in.”
Careers and the Workplace
Linked – Facebook layoffs are a reminder that your job won’t love you back
“Nevertheless, the most significant point of the article below isn’t to argue about the negatives of being a public company or not, it’s to point out what should have been obvious but too many people in tech have lost sight of. A company that consistently reminds you that you’re part of the family and that everyone should view it that way and dedicate themselves accordingly will let you go in a heartbeat when things aren’t going as well as they’d like.
And people wonder why quiet quitting is all the rage.”
Forget WFH. Professionals Want to Work Whenever
“As employers promote remote and hybrid arrangements to retain talent, workers are increasingly concerned about a commodity much more precious to them than location: time.”
How to Help an Employee Figure Out Their Career Goals
“It’s not always possible to help the people we supervise identify and work toward their career goals. But having a sense of purpose and a feeling of momentum in achieving our career goals is powerful — so when we can assist our employees in getting there, it’s a meaningful way we can make a difference in their lives and their professional success.”
Security and Privacy
Wrong Numbers, Fake Invoices, and Catfishing: How to Avoid the Top Internet Scams
“If you're online, you're at risk. We spoke to three security experts about what you can do to protect yourself.”
The Growing Risks of Data Retention
“Companies can no longer afford a leave-it-to-IT approach to data management. More than ever, they need to develop a cross-functional team from legal, privacy, records management, cybersecurity, and IT that can establish, monitor, and, most importantly, carry out policies. “
Time to Deal with Cyber Security Strategically, and from the Top Down
“This is no longer just about tech — if it ever was. This is about protecting the business against cyber-attacks which have now become a matter of “when, not if”. This is no longer something you can push down in the organisation.”
