Thought-provoking Things Worth Sharing - Issue #44
As we reach into the latter part of June, I'm also reminded that my birthday is coming up. Each year I take advantage of Facebook fundraisers to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. As you might imagine from my frequent mentions of mental health issues in the workplace, I have had my share of problems in the past, and quite frankly, I am lucky to still be here to share this information with you. Not everyone is that lucky, and we need more research and programs to help prevent suicide. It's taking too many from us much too soon.
If you have ever wanted to say think you for the things I share, please consider a donation to my fundraiser. It is the best gift I can get.

Linked: Bad news: The cybersecurity skills crisis is about to get even worse — www.mikemcbrideonline.com Now, the shortage of people leading to overworked stressed, and burned-out workers is the headline, but if you look at the reasons given in the article below, it's not "just" that. It's where that situation leads. When you're short-staffed and constantly putting out fires, you don't really take the time to think about showing appreciation, helping employees grow their skills and careers, or creating a diverse workplace. Yet those are the exact things that employees are looking for elsewhere. Appreciating and growing your employees is not something that is "nice to have" anymore. It's a requirement.

Linked: L&D’s Role in Attracting Top Talent — www.mikemcbrideonline.com The folks from this survey understand two things. 1. The skills they have today won't be enough to be successful tomorrow. Technology is changing the work we do at an ever-increasing clip. If they are in a job that isn't keeping pace, or giving them the opportunity to keep pace, it's going to end badly for them. 2. If an organization isn't recognizing the need for their talent to continuously learn it is not only offering a job without the kind of future they are seeking, but it's probably not offering itself the kind of future it needs. People see this. Your top people know it's true. They see a sinking ship long before you do. A ship that keeps doing what it's always done without growing and adapting to change is sinking. Maybe not today, or the next year, but eventually, they know.
