Thought-provoking Things Worth Sharing - Issue #59
So many meetings that could have been an email. According to the tweet below it's become a massive waste of time, which means a massive waste of money. What could we do differently? What would happen if we had asynchronous tools that allowed everyone to report on status, progress, and collaborate without needing to schedule so many meetings?
The tools exist. The skills and desire to use them? Not so much.
Food for thought going in to your weekend.
Training and Workplace Culture
Quick Thought - Work Culture is So Bad that We Use the Word Quitting to Describe Setting Boundaries. — www.mikemcbrideonline.com They are setting boundaries. They are cutting back on their commitment and engagement with work because they see that work is not the most important thing in life. They make decisions based on their mental health instead of the company's bottom line. No one is leaving their job in this situation. No one is not doing their work. They are simply not taking on extra work and commitments that they aren't getting paid for. Our society's relationship with work is so skewed that the word we have chosen for this is "quitting". There's something profoundly sad about that.
Linked: Maybe You Don't Have the Skills You Need to Manage Your Remote Workforce — www.mikemcbrideonline.com Suppose you or your management forces staff back into the office because you need the face-time. Or because you don't think your team can collaborate, you don't know who is being productive, etc. Instead of forcing it and running the risk of losing your best performers, ask yourself if what you need to do is manage differently. There's no reason for promotions to be based on face time. With all of our technology, there is also no excuse for not collaborating or communicating effectively. Managing a remote team is not impossible. It's just different. It requires that you change the way you manage.

Hang up, and call your bank directly. Go read the whole thing for more of the details on these services, and how they work. It's interesting. But if you remember nothing else, remember that when anyone calls and says they are calling about your account, a legal issue, etc. Hang up, and call the place they say they are calling from directly. That's not how any legitimate business works anymore, so the second someone calls you and starts asking you to verify who you are, be suspicious and hang up.
